Get The Smile You’ve Always Wanted With Porcelain Dental Veneers
- December 1, 2017
Relatively few people have perfect teeth. If you’re not one of those fortunate few, there are some things about your smile that you’re not happy with. At Fox Family Dentistry in Burke, VA, we’ve helped thousands of people get the smiles of their dreams with porcelain dental veneers. No matter what life may have thrown at your pearly whites, we can help.
Life Can Be Hard On Your Teeth
The beauty of your smile is determined by the shape, spacing, and whiteness of your visible teeth. Enamel is the single strongest substance in the human body, but even enamel has its limitations.
Enamel tends to thin with age. When that happens, the darker dentin layer underneath begins to show through. No amount of whitening will change the darker, even discolored appearance of your teeth.
Younger people aren’t immune to enamel problems. Chips, cracks, and discolorations from coffee, tea, and colored sodas are common enamel problems.
And if you have slight but unsightly gaps between your teeth, or irregularly shaped teeth, you might have despaired about ever having the smile you want.
Porcelain dental veneers can be the key to realizing your dream of a perfect smile.
What Are Porcelain Dental Veneers?
Veneers are extremely thin pieces of a material that are firmly bonded to the fronts of your teeth. Porcelain is the preferred veneer material for most people; it’s stronger, longer-lasting, and presents a natural appearance that matches your existing teeth.
Unlike your natural tooth enamel, porcelain dental don’t stain or become discolored with age. While porcelain is long-lasting, the durability of veneers is influenced by how well you care for your teeth.
Porcelain dental veneers can do more than beautify your smile. They can actually help strengthen teeth and prevent chipping, cracking, and breakage. And, porcelain dental veneers can be shaped to conceal irregularities and to hide small gaps.
There are some people for whom porcelain dental veneers aren’t the right solution for a beautiful smile. Decay in the teeth to receive veneers must be corrected first. People with active gum disease will need to have that process reversed before considering cosmetic dentistry. If you’re missing a front tooth, that’s not something that veneers can hide. A dental implant or bridge are options to consider.
With that said, the process of preparing teeth to receive porcelain dental veneers is pretty straightforward.
The first step is to ensure that the portion of your mouth that will be worked on is comfortably numb. It’s very rare to have any significant pain during this procedure, but at Fox Family Dentistry, we value your comfort.
Then, a small amount of enamel – roughly half a millimeter, in most cases – is removed from the fronts of the teeth that will receive the veneers. This is to ensure that thickness of the teeth, with the addition of the veneers, matches the thickness of your other teeth. It also helps avoid having a “bubbly” appearance to your smile.
During this visit, we’ll take careful measurements of the prepared teeth, and then place temporary veneers. About a week later, your new, beautiful, permanent dental veneers will be ready. At your second visit, the permanent veneers will be firmly bonded to your teeth.
And you’ll walk out with the smile of your dreams.
