Learn the Situations That a Dental Crown Can Help Address
Dental crowns are often informally referred to as “caps,” because they completely cover the part of a tooth that is normally visible above the gumline. They have many uses and may be recommended for several types of situations.
For example, if you have a tooth that is in danger of breaking because it has become weakened for some reason or another, a crown could help protect the tooth and prevent a crack from forming. Or, if a crack or other break in a tooth has already formed, a crown could help hold the tooth together and prevent the issue from getting worse.
Crowns can also help restore the full shape of a tooth that has become worn down for some reason or another. Many patients who deal with severe tooth grinding wear down their teeth and eventually need crowns, for example. Other patients that could benefit from dental crowns have teeth that are irregularly shaped naturally.
If a tooth has already undergone extensive treatments or has lost a lot of healthy structure and needs some extra strength, we may also recommend a crown. For example, if you have a large cavity that a tooth filling alone could not help or you have undergone a root canal, we may suggest capping your tooth for some added strength.
Crowns can also be used for cosmetic purposes, like hiding bad discoloration or stains on a tooth that cannot be lifted by a teeth whitening treatment.
Crowns can also be used as full tooth replacement options. We may recommend restoring a dental implant with a crown to completely replace an individual tooth, roots, crown, and all. Or we could attach a dental bridge using crowns on either side of a smile gap to replace one or more adjacent missing teeth.
Regardless of why you need to get a crown, we will always do our best to ensure your comfort during treatments. If there’s any chance of discomfort, we will numb your mouth using our pain-free Vibraject anesthesia system.
If you think that you could potentially benefit from a dental crown for any of the reasons above, call Fox Family Dentistry at 703-978-5253 to book a visit. You can also use our online form to schedule.
